Challenges to Technology Implementation (Howard County)
After discussing the challenges you identified with a partner, identify your greatest challenge and post it here. Don't forget to include the possible causes of this challenge.
Staff attitudes towards technology...some positive, some negative. Helping staff to recognize the value of technology and how it will help engage learners.
It's challenging to provide the professional dev. for tech. as well as all of the other competing demands for professional dev. In other words, making it a priority among the many other priorities.

Importance - teachers seeing technololgy as an integrated part of teaching and learning, not as an extra. Tech is part of all aspects of students' lives, not something that they see as an extra, many teachers don't see it that way and that's how they teach.
Teachers do not use the technology of the internet due to fear of the unknown. My younger teachers are using this technology more frequently. Many senior teachers do not want to change their style of teaching.
I feel that one of our greatest challenges is changing educators' attitudes toward the necessity of their embracing technology themselves so that they may have a greater effect on student learning.
One of the greatest challenges that we face with the integration of technology is the reluctance of teachers to change the way they have always taught. So many teachers feel that they learned without technology, so there is no reason to use technology when they teach. There are a variety of reasons for this. Somehow as administrators, we need to find a way to move teachers beyone the way they have always done things.
I find that it is challenging to provide training and staff development that will be implemented. Teachers find it difficult to learn new strategies for the delivery of instruction with so much accountability to curriculum objects. Many teachers believe the need to paper/pencil assessments to measure achievement.
The biggest challenge is getting the staff to completly buy in to technology. Many staff members are still afraid to use technology in their classrooms. They consider technology a chore or a burden.
I think many teachers are afraid of or unwilling to change their instructional strategies. They may feel that learning new technologies will take too long.
Teacher "discomfort" with technology is a large factor in their willingness to experiment with new methods of delivering their instruction. Perhaps intentional training that focuses on authentic methods of integrating technology into lesson delivery would help.
I think sometimes my difficulty in implementing technology is that it really isn't a way of thinking for me. I checked off everything on that awful survey - it made me realize I'm worlds away from other folks in this room.
Teachers need to understand why it is important to use technology as an integral part of instruction. They were taught without it, and they think this instruction is good enough for their students. It is also a matter of time - integrating technology takes time initially. If I have a lesson that I think works without technology, why should I take the time to create a new lesson that uses technology?
I want principals to require the media specialists to teach all teachers how to get into the Document Repository, use it and give them the passwords on during the opening staff week.
Staff need to be held accountable to embrace technology and learn and follow-through with provided resources/support to make technology successful. Resources/support personnel need to do everything they can to make technology accessible and available.
We do not have equal access as a county from school to school. Some teachers have difficuly with scheduling in to the computer lab; some teachers do not yet have access at home;etc
Principals must not expect immediate transitioning into technology usage with a "shot-in-the dark" one-time workshops during faculty meetings or half-day workshops to fill up time. On-going training and follow-up is imperative. This should be a look-for during classroom visitation.
A main challenge is the variance in comfort levels and abilities of the staff in effectively using technology. This could possibly be due to lack of meaningful professional development, unfamiliarity, having students who are very technologically savvy, and lack of resources.
Lack of knowledge. I need more information to be more effective. Most of the courses/conferences I've attended are so FAST paced that unless you're already familiar with the information, the whole process is ineffective. Also, having the information written out in understandable language so I can go home and practice what I was supposed to have learned.
I feel that one of the greatest challenges to implementing technology is lack of follow-through by the participants of the training. They do not always use the srategies and technology that they learned about in there classrooms.
Local colleges and universities have reported that HCPSS is not adequately preparing our students for success in post-secondary education - they are not comfortable/aware enough of how to use technology to access resources necessary for success. Students also need to learn how to be responsible when using technology and be held accountable, which is a life skill.
Teachers who are interested in using technology, go through training, and then don't use it often because of the failure of the technology to work properly.
Causes are probably a lack of time and the incompatibility of updates with older programs. When these failures occur, they discourage teachers from spending precious time using the technology.
Our Staff Development Catalog offerings in the county do not include a variety of instruction for technology use in the classroom. We have many teachers at different levels and we need to offer more options to them. Our summer offerings are not numerous enough to address all teachers.
There are many equity issues. Teachers who are using technology need daily access to LCD projectors. Schools do not have an equal availability of technology for staff and students.
Principals should require all teachers to have a technology requirement in their Appendix D forms. Our community is crying for teacher websites to help their children to stay on top of what is required daily. Our schedules are loaded daily and children are involved in many after school activities. Parents need a place to go to maintain contact with teachers and know what is required on their children to help them to succeed.
We are asking our parents to be involved in their children's learning but we do not provide resources. Our county assessments and state tests are rigorous. The new requirements for state assessments and graduation take preparation outside the classroom. If we could post reviews, rehearsal items for assessments, websites for information and learning programs, parents would have access to assist children to prepare.
